ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the government is fully aware of the burden on the poor due to the economic situation in the country and will do everything possible to reduce the burden of inflation on the people. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, a meeting was held in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding the provision of direct subsidy by the government to the deserving and poor members of the society in procurement of food and other necessities.

During the meeting, Special Assistant for Social Security Dr. Sania Nishtar gave a detailed briefing to the Prime Minister on the proposed "Ehsas Food Stamp" program. Under this program, direct subsidy will be provided by the government to the deserving persons for purchase of essential items. Government assistance will be made available directly, transparently and promptly to the beneficiaries through the provision of direct subsidies.

The purpose of the program is to adopt the method of direct financial assistance from the indirect subsidy system. Imran Khan was presented with statistics and preliminary estimates of the families and individuals benefiting from the program. The Prime Minister appreciated the proposed program. There is a full realization of the burden on the poor due to the economic situation in the country. "We do our best to reduce the burden of inflation on the poor. It is our responsibility to provide relief to the poor. We are fully aware of our responsibility and we will go to any lengths to meet it," he said. He said that transparent and efficient use of government subsidies is the top priority of the present government.

The Prime Minister directed that the procedures and data regarding the proposed system should be finalized as soon as possible, so that the program could be launched as soon as possible. Due to the increase, the PTI government is facing severe criticism from the people. The opposition is also taking the government by storm on the issue of inflation among other issues.
